Payroll Tax Extension

It would appear that the Republicans are trying their best to deny the President a win by extending the Payroll Tax Cut.  Once again they have proven to the American people that this has nothing to do with helping the citizens of this nation, but making sure the President doesn’t succeed.

The Republicans don’t give a hoot about the Middle Class.  Just take a look at the presidential candidates.  When asked at the Yahoo/ABC News Debate, not one of the candidates could provide an answer when asked to describe a time in their lives when they had to give up a luxury because of economic hardship.  None of them.  There is not one of these candidates that knows what it’s like to live from paycheck to paycheck.  I seriously doubt that any of these candidates can even remember what a paycheck looks like.

Regardless of all that, by not passing the tax cut extension, they are essentially raising taxes.  By their own words, not extending a tax cut is the same as raising taxes.  That is what they said when the question about letting the Bush era tax cuts expire.  Many of them have even signed pledges swearing to not raise taxes, yet they are still fighting tooth and nail against the payroll tax cut extension.  Grover Norquist, the father of the no new taxes pledge, tells the Republicans that it does not go against their no new tax pledge to let these tax cuts expire.

The latest Republican version of the bill to extend the Payroll Tax Cut includes provisions that will require people receiving unemployment to take drug tests (which I’m not entirely opposed to), show they have a high school diploma or start GED classes, and force the President to make a decision on the Keystone Pipeline within 60 days.

(Those of you who don’t know what the Keystone Pipeline is, that is a whole separate post.  Think of the Alaska pipeline running from North Dakota to South Texas.  I will post on that in a few days.)

Sounds like hypocricy to me.  But then again, I can hear with both ears, the left one and the right one.

Voter ID Laws

by Patrick Armour — Categories: Daily RantLeave a comment

Somebody reminded me of an old saying today.  I don’t remember who originally said it, so forgive me for not citing my quotation.

“If you are young and not liberal, you have no heart.  If you are old and not conservative, you have no brain.”

The statement came up today when I was discussing the Voter ID laws that have sprung up over the last couple of years with a bunch of 20 somethings. I thought there was going to be an old fashioned bar brawl when I gave my opinion.

To start with, I totally agree that there needs to be a form of photo identification to prove a voter is who they say they are and live where they say they do.  That being said, I believe that these new laws that require a voter to purchase a government issued ID Card is the same as implementing a poll tax.

In Section 1 of the 24th Amendment to the Constitution states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax. “

So the state governments are effectively forcing its citizens to give the government money (to buy a photo ID) to vote which is clearly unconstitutional and I believe the Supreme Court will verify this when these laws go before them.

So once again, the Centrist Nutjob has the solution that would not only make Voter ID laws constitutional, but would allow those that cannot afford a new Drivers License or State ID card (they ain’t cheap).  This has to be the simplest solution ever.  Ready?

Create a “Free Voter ID Card”.  Now wasn’t that simple?  Ok.  Let me explain this a little bit.

1. The card would have to be free to avoid any “poll tax” argument.

2. The card would need to have an expiration date of 10 years or so.

3. It needs easy to get.  Set up voter registration/ID kiosks at malls, grocery stores, churches, schools, etc.  Give people the easiest way possible to get registered and get their Voter ID Card.

That’s my solution.  Don’t agree with me?  Comment…

Poor Herman

by Patrick Armour — Categories: Daily Rant — Tags: , , Leave a comment

It is all a smear campaign by the Rick Perry campaign

It is all a smear campaign by the Democrats

It is all a smear campaign by the media

It is all character assassination by disgruntled employees

Poor Herman.  Everybody is to blame except him.  One thing that shows a persons character is how well they accept responsibility.  When you call everybody else a liar, chances are pretty good that you are the liar yourself.

So we find out today whether or not his wife is going to allow him to stay in the campaign.  This should be an interesting press conference.  I wonder who he’s going to blame today.  He’s running out of people to blame.

EDIT: Cain has announced that he is suspending his campaign.  I’m a little disappointed because the GOP primary circus just became less entertaining.
